Tell Wendy's to Follow Burger King's Lead on Animal Welfare!

In 2001, PETA called off its "Wicked Wendy's" campaign after the company agreed to make some animal welfare changes and pledged to continue to make improvements. Sadly, in the last six years, Wendy’s has not taken one single significant step to reduce the suffering of the animals killed for its restaurants:

  1. Wendy's pig flesh still comes from suppliers that confine pregnant pigs to metal and cement "gestation crates" so small that the pigs can’t even turn around.
  2. Wendy's eggs still come from suppliers that cram hens into tiny wire "battery cages."
  3. Wendy's chicken flesh still comes from suppliers that slit live birds' throats and scald them to death, often while they're still conscious.

Mother pigs used by Wendy's are kept in tiny metal crates for years.

As you may know, Burger King recently announced groundbreaking animal welfare improvements that will significantly reduce the suffering of the chickens and pigs killed for its restaurants. Specifically, Burger King is decreasing its use of pig flesh from suppliers that use gestation crates and eggs from suppliers that use battery cages. Burger King is also giving purchasing preference to chicken suppliers that use or switch to far less cruel slaughter methods.

We've asked Wendy's to follow Burger King's lead, but its executives have refused to do so.

Now we need you to urge Wendy's to immediately commit to the same or better animal welfare standards as Burger King.

Urgent Update: Because of the strong response from PETA members and supporters, Wendy's executives have begun blocking emails from PETA's Action Center system. It is vital that the company continues to receive feedback about this issue. Please immediately call Wendy's at 614-764-3201 and/or fax them a note at 614-764-3256. Please also send an email to the following addresses (see below for a sample letter.)

Sample Letter to Wendy's Executives:

Dear Wendy's executives,

I am shocked to hear that Wendy's has done nothing in the last six years to improve the lives and deaths of the animals killed for its restaurants. As you know, Burger King recently promised to start buying a significant share of its pig flesh and eggs from suppliers that don't confine hens and mother pigs to cruel metal cages and is also giving purchasing preference to chicken suppliers that use or switch to a less cruel form of slaughter.

Wendy's has refused to follow Burger King's lead. Millions of chickens and pigs continue to suffer enormously because of Wendy's lack of action.

Please do the right thing and help reduce animal suffering by promising that Wendy's will match or exceed Burger King's new animal welfare standards.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
