'Champions on Ice' Star and Three-Time Olympian Surya Bonaly Champions Seals
Three-time Olympian and world-renowned French figure skater and "Champions on Ice" star Surya Bonaly is famous for being the only figure skater to land a backflip on one skate. But what really makes Surya "flip out" is Canada's cruel seal hunt. The winner of nine French titles, five consecutive European titles, and three world silver medals, Surya has now earned the title "animal champion" after posing for two new PETA ads in which she supports baby seals' right to "feel free on the ice" and urges her fans to "Get the violence off the ice".
Fiery on and off the ice, Surya was once asked by a young fan, "But isn't fur so pretty?" to which she replied, "Yes, my dear, you have pretty hair, too—but does that mean we should cut your head off and wear it?"
A dedicated fur foe, Surya knows that there's nothing colder than the Canadian seal hunt. Every year, 270,000 seal pups as young as 2 weeks old are beaten with clubs, shot, impaled on hooks, and even skinned alive for their fur as their mothers watch helplessly nearby. As Surya knows, with all the warm, luxurious alternatives to fur available, there is no excuse to wear real fur.
That's why Surya is calling on all her fans to write to the Canadian government and tell officials to end the cruel and deadly seal hunt once and for all. It's time for Canada to erase this stain on its reputation and call off the slaughter immediately. Use the form below to send an e-mail to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper asking for an immediate end to the cruel harp seal hunt.
