The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics Needs a Makeover

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC) and its Compact for Safe Cosmetics, established in 2002, calls on cosmetics manufacturers to test their products for effects such as cancer-causing potential, hormone disruption, skin allergy, genetic and nervous system toxicity, and birth defects. If these tests are conducted according to standard protocols, they will mean suffering and death for hundreds of thousands of animals in laboratories.

PETA has corresponded and spoken with the member organizations of the CSC on several occasions asking that the language in the Compact for Safe Cosmetics be altered to make it clear that animal tests should not be used. The response that we received two years ago indicated that it was not the intention of the member organizations of the CSC to call for animal tests with the compact and that they would consider altering the language. At the request of the CSC, PETA therefore agreed to remove from our Web site a call to action against these groups while they determined what to do regarding the language of the compact.

Last year, PETA once again urged the CSC to change the language in the Compact for Safe Cosmetics. We met with Environmental Working Group, a member organization of the CSC, shortly thereafter and were hopeful that we could work cooperatively on several issues surrounding animal testing. We have since been informed that the CSC will not alter the language of the compact per our request.

Please let the member organizations of the CSC know that you don't want more animals to suffer and die for yet another shade of lipstick, nail polish, or mascara. To learn more about cruelty-free cosmetics companies and alternatives to animal testing, please visit CaringConsumer.com.
