We have learned that the defendants in the case against L&D Farm and Kennel will appear in Jackson County Superior Court this Thursday, April 17. This forfeiture hearing will officially determine whether the hundreds of dogs seized from this facility in February will be confiscated and made available for adoption or will be returned to their alleged abusers. These dogs—who were reportedly removed from filthy, crowded cages and a lifetime of ill treatment and neglect—have been undergoing rehabilitation with area rescuers.
As you may recall, PETA originally became involved in this case when we were flooded with calls about alleged cruelty to animals at a "high-volume" dog breeder in Jackson County, Georgia. According to local media, the owners and staff of L&D Farm and Kennel were arrested after officials from Jackson County Animal Control and the Georgia Department of Agriculture raided the Nicholson, Georgia, facility to discover a dead dog who was still lying in his cage, the bones of several dogs who had died some time ago, and approximately 300 dogs who were living in cramped, filthy cages. Many of these dogs reportedly appeared malnourished and required immediate veterinary care following years of neglect.
Area residents—who want to make sure this case is treated as the serious crime that it is—have called on PETA for help encouraging the officials in charge of this case in their pursuit of justice. Please contact Judge David Motes and prosecutor Ryan Bramblett to thank them for their diligence thus far. Please also urge them to take every measure necessary to ensure that the defendants, if convicted, are barred from possessing animals for as long as possible; that any animals who have been removed from their charge are not returned to them; and that any animals remaining under their charge are seized.
