Julian Clary looks like a picture as he sits on a throne – stark naked, except for a teddy bear strategically placed to cover his "crown jewels" – in PETA's new ad condemning the killing of Canadian black bears to make caps for The Queen's Guards.

In his exclusive interview with PETA, Clary says, "I'd hoped the mere threat of me taking my clothes off would cause The Queen to switch to synthetic fur, but it seems not. Now I am exposing my remarkably well preserved body to make her see sense".

A lifelong animal lover and long-time PETA pal, the legendary TV personality and compassionate comedian has taken The Queen to task for her unbearable cruelty to bears before. In a letter to Her Majesty, Clary wrote, "From one queen to another, I am writing to beseech Your Royal Highness to replace the Guards' bearskin caps with an elegant, non-lethal material".

It can take the entire hide of one bear to make just one guard's headpiece. Many of the bears are shot several times before they die, and some escape the hunters only to bleed to death. When mother bears are killed, orphaned cubs are left behind to starve.

Clary is the latest in a long list of celebrities and politicians – including Pamela Anderson, Sadie Frost, Ann Widdecombe MP, Mary McCartney, Lucy Davis, Sir Roger Moore, Jilly Cooper and Amanda Holden – who have condemned the slaughter of black bears for ceremonial headpieces.
