Ask the Government of Tamil Nadu to Ban the Cruel 'Game' of Jallikattu
In the Madurai, Tiruchirapalli and Tanjore districts of Tamil Nadu province, a yearly "game" is held in which bundles of money or other prizes are tied to the horns of a bull who is released in an open area and then chased by villagers. The terrified and agitated bull tries in vain to escape as the villagers chase him and try to control him by grabbing his horns and holding on while attempting to remove the prize tied to the bull's horns. Sometimes several bulls are released at once, adding to the chaos and confusion for the animals.
Only men participate in this cruel display, which is supposed to demonstrate their masculine strength but really only demonstrates government-sanctioned animal abuse. In the belief that it will make the animals more ferocious, the bulls who are used for jallikattu are not allowed to mate. Villagers frequently place bets on the outcome while ignoring the obvious fear and terror experienced by the bulls.
