The Makar Sankranti Festival, which is now under way, gives birds little reason to celebrate, as more than a million kites take to the air. Although it may be fun for participants, the annual celebration's kite-flying contest inflicts terrible damage on hundreds of pigeons, crows, owls, kites and other birds each year. Participants routinely use kite threads coated with glass, which become "giant cheese-slicers in the air" to birds who fly into them at top speed. Breaking and cutting their wings and shoulders, birds suffer deep wounds which, if left untreated, often result in a slow and painful death. Last year in Ahmedabad alone, more than 750 birds were treated for kite-related injuries. The only way to prevent this suffering is to ban the kite-flying competitions that are part of this festival.

You Can Help Stop This!
