Tell Iams That You Won't Buy While Animals Die!
For nearly 10 months in 2002 and early 2003, a PETA investigator went undercover at an Iams contract testing laboratory and discovered a dark and sordid secret beneath the wholesome image of the dog- and cat-food manufacturer. Undercover footage captured images of dogs gone crazy from intense confinement to barren steel cages and cement cells, dogs left piled on a filthy paint-chipped floor after having chunks of muscle hacked from their thighs, dogs surgically debarked, and horribly sick dogs and cats languishing in their cages, neglected and left to suffer with no veterinary care. In addition to the pain that these animals experienced in the course of experiments, animals in Iams labs were denied companionship and enrichment and were confined to their barren cages for at least 23 ½ hours every day.

PETA has met with Iams' director of research on several occasions since our investigation to discuss Iams' transition to humane feeding tests conducted in homes and in veterinary offices using animals volunteered by their guardians, and although we have seen improvements, the situation is still dire for many animals forced to endure painful and unnecessary tests for Iams' companion animal food.
Recently, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released an official complaint against Iams' former contract testing lab, stating that it "has shown a lack of good faith" and alleging violations documented by government inspectors at the contract laboratory from 2002 to 2005, including failure to ensure that personnel were trained to perform experiments on animals and failure to provide veterinary care and to observe animals daily. See the complete list of violations here.
We've made progress, but Iams and Procter & Gamble (Iams' parent company) still have a long way to go! Please write to Iams and P&G officials today to tell them that you won't buy their products until they end all laboratory tests on animals.
