Update: Calves Reportedly Caged in Excrement and Denied Food and Water!

PETA received several recent complaints from individuals who claimed to be affiliated with a transport ship carrying four containers of cows to Oakland, Calif. Our sources allege that the ship—the Mokihana, which is owned by Matson Navigation Company, Inc.—transported these animals in extraordinarily inhumane conditions. Photos provided to PETA appear to corroborate our complainant's concerns. According to sources, the 180 cattle were confined to cages amid at least 1 foot of urine and excrement for five days until the filth was purportedly washed out of the containers when the ship returned to sea. We are also told that the animals were forced to go hungry for several days as well.

When the ship docked at the Richmond Port in the San Francisco Bay, PETA caseworkers called on authorities in Contra Costa County to investigate. It is our understanding that attending officers demanded that food be provided to these hungry animals immediately.

Please let your voice be heard by urging Matson to set the standard for humane transport.
