Action on the California Healthy Pets Act, Assembly Bill 1634—which would require most cats and dogs in California to be spayed or neutered—has been postponed. We will continue to follow this bill and post any updates as they happen.

Sincere thanks to everyone for your hard work, phone calls, letters, faxes, and e-mails. Many of you traveled hundreds of miles to attend legislative hearings in Sacramento. All of you made it clear to the California legislature that animals have many friends who are serious about their protection—a significant message! According to news reports, Assemblymember Lloyd Levine—the bill's sponsor—said that he didn't believe he had enough support for the bill to pass as written. Work on amendments is now underway.

The California Healthy Pets Act has gained support from animal protection organizations, veterinarians, city police departments, and individuals including dozens of celebrities who have joined with PETA to use their pens and voices to show their support. Katherine Heigl, Ryan Gosling, William Shatner, Bradley Whitford, Adam Brody, and others have signed PETA's petition to the California Assembly supporting the bill; Bill Maher has laid out his "new rule" for cats and dogs in a public service announcement; and Kevin Nealon and other Hollywood figures have voiced their support in a new PETA video.

Assemblymember Levine bravely took on the multibillion-dollar pet trade industry and its well-paid lobbyists. He needs to hear that his dedication and efforts are appreciated. Thank Assemblymember Levine today and urge him not to give up.

It's important that AB 1634—and the public interest that the bill's introduction has drawn to the issue of companion animal overpopulation—not be allowed to die like the millions of animals born into a world that doesn't want them. Write letters to the editors of California newspapers urging passage of this vital piece of legislation. Meet with your local officials to get a similar law passed in your own community. And let us know if you need help lobbying for a local law.

Please use the form below to thank Assemblymember Levine for his dedication to ending the suffering caused by companion animal homelessness.
