A vital piece of legislation that will help federal officials tackle these violent crimes and bloodthirsty citizens committing them—the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act—has been introduced this month in the House of Representatives and the Senate and needs your support.

If made law, the act—known as H.R. 137 in the House and S. 261 in the Senate—will strengthen prohibitions against animal fighting. The transport of animals for fighting—currently a federal misdemeanor—would become a felony, with offenders facing three years in prison. The legislation would also criminalize the interstate shipment of cockfighting paraphernalia, including the razor-sharp gaffs typically attached to roosters' legs before fights.
